After hosting 30+ community events, I’ve narrowed my essentials down to make each event successful, enjoyable and sustainable. If you're an instructor thinking about hosting your first community event and you don't know where to start, this is for you!
Save your voice, use a mic
A wireless mic has been the biggest game changer for me. My voice stays intact, the class can hear every cue, and I'm not shouting myself hoarse by the cool-down. I use this portable voice amplifier from Amazon so I can move around the room and know that the sound will stay consistent the whole way through. For music, I rotate between my JBL Clip 5 and these Soundcore speakers which are both super portable!
Protect your skin
Sun protection is so important not just for yourself, but for your attendees as well. For those outdoor classes, I always pack my We are Feel Good Inc. sunscreen and pass it around before we start — it’s become part of the pre-class ritual.
I also apply my Laneige lip sleeping mask before I teach to keep my lips hydrated while I teach. I’ve been using this for years (my fave!!!)
Go-to Pilates equipment
I’ve had this Celsius mat from Rebel Sport for years and it still goes with me to every single event. It’s lightweight, grippy, and easy to clean (yes, this is important considering our events are hosted everywhere - on a beach, rooftop, parks, studios). I also pack a few wipes in my bag just in case.
Stay hydrated
Hands up if you've ever finished teaching a class and realised you didn't drink a single sip of water. I've been there. Now my Hydro Flask comes everywhere with me and I always mix in Sodii electrolytes before a session to keep me hydrated for longer.
To our fellow instructors, have fun with it and go build something great. We’re rooting for you!
